Karashi-ren-Concrete

Because of its versatility, concrete blocks with holes are mass-produced at low cost and are used in various scenes, mainly at construction sites. The reality is that the design is familiar to anyone who has seen it, but for the general public who are not involved in the construction work, it doesn’t bother them at all, and its value to them is so low that they don’t need it for free. In particular, for industrial products such as concrete blocks, evaluation criteria are set only for their practicality and functionality, and unlike mass-market products, the “beauty” of their appearance and their value outside their original functions are not discussed. In this work, a concrete block was made to look like “Lotus root with mustard” of Japanese food. By doing so, I succeeded in depriving the concrete block of “industriality” and making it into a exhibit. This is an attempt to have viewers reevaluate the value of blocks, which had been close to zero, by nullifying the conventional evaluation criteria that focused only on practicality and functionality.   <Art Plan>
